Dedicated to the artist that are no longer with us: Voices of Silence

Born October 11th 1919

Died October 16th 1990

It’s hard to think that a jazz front man would be anything other than piano, trumpet, sax, or guitar in general. But and instrument is a voice to be heard regardless. Like the bass, the drummer can be a vital piece to any group and drummer Art Blakey was ruling with his group known as the Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers which severed as a proving platform for up and coming young musicians.

Artist like Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter to name a few went on to become major leaders in their own right and where part of his alumni list which features tons of young talent. Some other names included Branford Marsalis, Gary Bartz, Billy Harper, Javon Jackson, Curtis Fuller, Julian Priester , Terrance Blachard, Kenny Dorham and so many more.

Blakey was the man as he backed Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Lou Donaldson, Billy Eckstine, Charlie Parker, and many more also including Horace Silver, Kenny Durham etc.

The album Ugetsu ” Japanese word meaning fantasy”  is one of my favorite and known to be a favorite of jazz enthusiasts worldwide.
